The Complete Guide to Installing an EV Charger at Home

6 min read
If you've made the switch to an electric vehicle โ€” or you're about to โ€” one of the first things you'll want is a Level 2 charger at home. Charging on a standard 120V outlet (Level 1) works in a pinch, but it adds only 3-5 miles of range per hour. A 240V Level 2 charger gives you 25-30 miles per hour, meaning a full charge overnight.

Level 1 vs Level 2: What's the Difference?

Level 1 uses a standard 120V household outlet. It's slow (40+ hours for a full charge on most EVs) but requires no installation. Level 2 uses a 240V circuit โ€” the same voltage as your dryer or oven โ€” and charges 5-7x faster. For daily driving, Level 2 is what you want.

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade?

An EV charger typically needs a 40-50 amp dedicated circuit. If your panel is 200 amps and has available breaker slots, you're probably fine. If you have a 100-amp panel or it's already near capacity, you may need an upgrade first. We always check this during our free in-home assessment.

Hardwired vs Plug-In

You have two options: a NEMA 14-50 outlet (the same plug your dryer uses) which lets you unplug and move the charger, or a hardwired connection which is permanent but slightly cleaner. Both work great โ€” it comes down to personal preference.

Permits and Inspections

In Washington state, EV charger installations require an electrical permit. Short Stop Electrical handles all permit pulling and inspection scheduling. We've done hundreds of installs across Pierce, King, Snohomish, Kitsap, and Thurston counties โ€” we know exactly what each jurisdiction requires.

What About the Federal Tax Credit?

The federal government currently offers a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost of EV charger installation (up to $1,000 for residential). This applies to both the equipment and the installation labor. Check with your tax advisor for current eligibility.

How Long Does Installation Take?

Most Level 2 installations take 2-4 hours. If your panel needs an upgrade or we're running conduit across a long distance (garage on the opposite side of the house, for example), it may take a full day. We'll give you an accurate timeline during your free consultation.
