Does bathroom exhaust fan installation require a permit?
A direct replacement (same size fan, same location) typically doesn't require a permit in most Washington jurisdictions. Adding a new fan where none existed, or running a new circuit, does require a permit. We'll clarify this for your specific situation.
Can I run a bathroom exhaust fan into the attic instead of outside?
No — this is a code violation. Venting into the attic dumps moisture directly into your attic insulation and framing, causing mold and rot. All exhaust fans must vent to the exterior through a properly sealed duct and exterior vent cap. We correct improperly vented fans regularly.
What CFM exhaust fan do I need?
The minimum recommendation is 1 CFM per square foot of bathroom floor area, with a minimum of 50 CFM for small bathrooms. A 100 sq ft bathroom needs at least a 100 CFM fan. We'll recommend the right size based on your bathroom dimensions and ceiling height.
