10 Electrical Safety Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

4 min read
Electrical fires cause over 50,000 house fires per year in the United States, resulting in nearly 500 deaths and $1.3 billion in property damage. The good news? Most electrical fires are preventable. Here are 10 things every homeowner should know.

1. Don't Overload Outlets

Plugging too many devices into one outlet โ€” especially through power strips daisy-chained together โ€” is one of the most common causes of electrical fires. Each outlet is rated for a specific amperage. If you need more outlets, have an electrician install additional circuits.

2. Replace Damaged Cords Immediately

Frayed, cracked, or chewed cords (thanks, pets) are a shock and fire hazard. Don't tape over damage โ€” replace the cord or the appliance entirely.

3. Test Your GFCI Outlets Monthly

GFCI outlets (the ones with Test/Reset buttons) protect against electrocution in wet areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and garages. Press the Test button monthly to make sure they trip. If they don't, call an electrician.

4. Know Your Panel

Every homeowner should know where their electrical panel is and how to shut off the main breaker in an emergency. Label each breaker so you know which circuits they control.

5. Don't Ignore Flickering Lights

Occasional flickering during a storm is normal. Persistent flickering โ€” especially in multiple rooms โ€” can indicate loose wiring, an overloaded circuit, or a failing panel. Get it checked.

6. Keep Water Away from Electricity

This sounds obvious, but wet hands + light switches, appliances near sinks without GFCI protection, and outdoor outlets without weatherproof covers are all common hazards.

7. Install Smoke Detectors on Every Level

And test them monthly. Replace batteries annually and replace the entire unit every 10 years. Interconnected smoke detectors (when one goes off, they all go off) are required in new construction and strongly recommended for older homes.

8. Don't DIY Electrical Work

YouTube makes it look easy, but electrical work without proper knowledge and permits can result in fires, shocks, failed inspections, and voided homeowner's insurance. Always hire a licensed electrician for anything beyond changing a light bulb.

9. Watch for Warning Signs

Burning smells, warm outlets, buzzing sounds, discolored outlet covers, and sparks when plugging in devices are all warning signs of a serious problem. Don't ignore them.

10. Schedule an Electrical Inspection

If your home is more than 25 years old, or you've just purchased a home, schedule a professional electrical inspection. Many issues hide behind walls and aren't visible until they cause problems. Contact Short Stop Electrical for a thorough inspection.
